Adventure Golf Australia
In this episode, Adventure Golfer Ian Cross heads home to his native Australia. He begins in Sydney at a high quality but affordable public course in the heart of the city, Moore Park Golf Club, found next door to the Sydney cricket grounds. Ian plays with teenage sensation Skye Choueiri-Solly who is destined to land on the pro circuit. From public to private, Ian’s next stop is the Royal Sydney course, where the administrators refuse him access.
Ian decides to check up on the Hyde Park Barracks, the centre of the English convict exile that birthed modern Australia. Then he heads to nearby Bondi Beach, a cultural lynchpin that plays a big part in shaping modern Australia. Ian joins the surf culture at Bondi by signing up for a lesson and gives it his best shot.
After a night in some upscale digs, Ian is on his way north, out of the city, and in to Hunter Valley. His first stop is the Vintage, the newest of the Valley course, designed by none other than Australian golf royalty, Greg Norman. The Vintage has all the features of a classic Norman and Ian decides its best to hit the links with club pro Richard Mercer. Hunter Valley is famous for its golf, but also its wine. Ian pays a visit to a local vineyard to sample the vintage.
Ian’s final stop is his hometown Canberra. The Australian capital was laid out in 1912 and is home to the Australian parliament. Ian is led on a tour of the corridors of power by one of the MP’s, Alex Somlay. After a stop at the art gallery Ian lands on the first tee at the Federal course. Waiting for him on the fairway is a herd of kangaroo, just a stone’s throw from the city. It’s Australia at its finest.
