Before There Were Architects
Host Judith Jones discovers English building from the early Christian settlements to the Baroque mansions of the 17th century. On the island of Lindisfarne, Northumberland, Judith learns about the 7th century influence of Roman Catholicism on traditional English churches. Judith then explores the Gothic influences in the north of England, an architectural form stylized in the Harry Potter films. She visits the 11th century Durham Cathedral and Fountains Abbey, home to the Cistercian Monastic Order. Then in Cambridgeshire, Judith admires the ornate ceilings of 14th Century Ely Cathedral. In Kentwell Hall, Sudbury, Suffolk, Judith explores an English manor house, and then travels to Burgley House, Lincolnshire, to see a 16th century Elizabethan house transformed into a Baroque manor. Finally, Judith explores the Baroque Castle Howard, designed by one of England's first architects.
