The Age of Architects

Judith explores the next 200 years of English architectural history. With the Queen's House of 1638 in Greenwich, East London, designed by Inigo Jones, Judith begins a journey, which celebrates ancient and classical beauty, an architectural age influenced by Palladio that includes visits to Wren's Church of 'Magnus the Martyr' in London, and St. Paul's Cathedral, rebuilt after the Great Fire of London in 1666. At Osterley House in Middlesex, she tours a lavish country mansion and explores the work of Robert Adam. She then visits the monumental Hammerwood Lodge in East Sussex, and witnesses the development of Georgian architecture embodied in the grand salons and crescents in the city of Bath. In Saltaire, Bradford, Yorkshire, Judith discovers architecture of the early years of the Industrial Revolution at an estate transformed in to a textile mill, and in Bristol, she admires the Isambard Kingdom Brunel's revolutionary Clifton Suspension Bridge. In the early Victorian Age, England's architects were again heavily influenced by the Gothic, as seen at London's Kings Cross St Pancreas Station.
